What is STEM?

Rube Goldberg Machines

Developing a Lesson

  • How to Debug a STEM Lesson Plan Blog Post from Middle Web

Connections to Real World

  • Get the Math show math and algebra application and careers. Several videos available.
  • The Futures Channel also provides videos with career links.
  • Pixar, the math behind the movies, Youtube video

Coding Resources

Engineering is Elementary

  • EiE has a mission to support educators and children with curricula and professional development that develop engineering literacy. Resources are divided into grade bands with links for school or after school activities.
    • Sign up for the newsletter
  • Engineering Everywhere is a FREE engineering curriculum for middle school-aged youth in after school and camp programs.

Team Building

  • STEM teams should foster a sense of purpose, creativity, accomplish and a spirit that team members need each other to to solve the problems. Several ideas to build teams are found in this article.
  • Student Teaming Tips

Problem Solving Plan

  • Document student work, plans, and modifications with STEM or Engineering Notebook as a Word document
  • STEM projects from PBS
  • Thomas Elementary--Build tower out of 40 spaghetti and tape, includes engineering notebook and assignment
  • Paper Airplane
    • Create a paper airplane that will stay in the air the longest OR
    • Create a paper airplane that will fly the longest distance
    • Google "longest flying paper airplane" to see several different videos
  • Spaghetti Bridge Building video and article
  • From EIE Earthquake Bubbles
  • Bridge Building
  • STEM and Zombies from TI
  • Successful Stem Education
  • STEM Collaborative
  • Cotton Ball Launcher
  • 2nd graders create a tower to hold a tennis ball in front of a fan. Emphasis is on developing a growth mindset. Article and videos
  • MicroWorlds Ex Logo from Tom Price, YouTube site with videos
  • Students in the Engineering Orientation class at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore., concluded their course with a competition that challenged them to design and build a "frosty beverage delivery system." Students had to use cardboard, duct tape and glue to create the final product, which was supposed to move two six-packs of root beer across a 12-foot span without the bottles touching the ground.

Robots in Classroom

STEM in Action

  • Bridge Basher Create and test bridges
  • Simple Physics Create several different structures and test
  • Rocket Science 101 Build and test rockets
  • Tinkerbox is a fun, free-to-play physics puzzle game. While it is full of interesting science facts and teaches basic engineering concepts,
  • Scratchjr By snapping together graphical programming blocks, children can make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. Students learn to solve problems and design projects as they use math and language in a meaningful and motivating context
  • Apps for EIE
